A LEGEND IS LOST IN ADAMS COUNTY

December 7, 2010 by Dave Swope

The sportsmen and women have loss a dear friend today, Edward Fuhrman. Ed dedicated 55 years of his life to promoting and protecting our outdoor heritage. One who in 1946 had a concern for the future of hunting and fishing, trapping and recreation activities of our great outdoors. Following these concerns was the beginning of the McSherrystown Fish and Game Protective Association. One of 28 chartered members today, Ed was a dedicated pioneer who has endeavored to promote and advance the goals of the Pa. Fish & Boat Commission and Pa. Game Commission and many other agencies involved in conservation, a true conservationist and friend.

Early in 1974 his efforts led the club to invest in a cooperative nursery in Adams County, the first involving High School students rearing trout. Ed's involvement led to the first Farm Game Project #70 in Adams County and served as a Deputy Wildlife Conservation Officer for 43 years, being named outstanding Deputy in Pa. January 1979. Ed was also recognized as the Senior Wildlife Conservation Award from the Pa. Game Commission in 1985. In 1990 Ed received the Liberty Bell Award in Gettysburg, and was presented the "pioneer award" for his continuing efforts and experience in conservation and educating and interests in the youths programs at the McSherrystown F&G. On September 22, 1990 Ed was present in Harrisburg for the signing of the proclamation proclaiming hunting and fishing day by the former Governor Robert Casey.

From the start August 25th, 1959 of the Pa. Game Commission Hunter Education courses Ed has volunteered his time as an instructor. In 2006 Ed was one of the first to received the Pa. Federation "Hall of Fame Award" for his outstanding direction and volunteer efforts. Ed Fuhrman demonstrates a wonderful example for all sportsmen and women says the Executive Director of the Pa. Federation of sportsmen, Melody Zullinger.
